Braidwood & District Historical Society cares for one of the region’s most significant collections of local history. Our archives hold thousands of documents, photographs, maps, manuscripts and rare primary sources—an invaluable resource for family historians, property researchers and anyone exploring the stories of Braidwood and its district. Family History
Our Family History Archives include cemetery records, local family files, photographs, newspaper extracts, oral histories and a wide range of unique primary sources gathered over many decades. The local family files contain material contributed by families undertaking their own research, as well as research compiled by BDHS volunteers.
Property History
From early land grants and subdivision plans to rate books, photographs and local stories, our archives offer a rich foundation for understanding the history of properties across the district.
To get started
Complete our Family History or Property History Lookup Request form, providing as much detail as possible (links below).
Email the form to familyhistory@braidwoodmuseum.org.au.
Lookup Requests are $10 for non‑members and FREE for members (see our Membership Page).
Once we receive your Lookup Request and fee, we will provide an outline of what we have located and the options available for viewing the material in person or receiving copies.
Accessing Our Archives
Researchers and family historians are welcome to explore our archives during museum opening hours - Thursday to Monday, 10.00am to 5.00pm - or by appointment.
If you cannot visit in person, we can photocopy and post, or scan and email, the relevant pages from the local family file at $1 per page (+ postage).
Extended Research Services
If you would like a deeper investigation, our professional volunteer researchers can undertake extended research on your behalf.
Research Fees
$40 per hour (non‑members)
$30 per hour (members)
Most enquiries take 2–4 hours.
All fees help preserve our archives and support the volunteer work that makes this service possible.
Waiting Periods
Our researchers are volunteers, and due to high demand:
- Initial Lookup Requests may take 2-3 weeks
- extended research requests may take up to 4–6 week.
